Autism Awareness Week : April 1 - 7
As a cause very close to our heart we will be once again celebrating Autism Awareness Week. Using this opportunity to create conversations, raise awareness, provide education and support to families and raising funds for a good cause.
Why Autism Awareness Week?
In January 2019, The Move Your Body Studio launched our NEW Sensory School Readiness Program. This program was designed to support children with disabilities, developmental delays, anxiety or additional needs – build the necessary skills required to set them up for success and support their transition to school the following year. The launch of this greatly needed program has been well received by our families and the children are already making positive steps towards building their independence!
80% of the children attending our program have a diagnosis of ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder: A lifelong neurological developmental disability that affects social skills, communication, sensory processing and repetitive behaviours.
This year for Autism Awareness Week (April 1-7) we are continuing to raise awareness and education throughout the Karratha community, providing face to face support to families, and this year - raising funds to support the children attending our Sensory School Readiness Program. As an organisation who’s concept was developed with the hopes to support the Autism community and provide sensory friendly, social environments - this is a cause close to our hearts.
This program provides a unique difference to these children by providing a small group classroom setting, and using Active Play as a regulation and learning tool, to allow children to work towards building new school routines, social and emotional skills, independence and fine motor skills.
Unfortunately due to the requirements of the program and high running costs involved in providing a specialised learning program in a small class setting, we are forced to seek outside financial support to continue to provide each child with the hands on support required to allow them to continue to interact and engage in early learning activities.
Our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase specialised sensory equipment, new class resources and allow us to employ an additional Educator to support the children further in the classroom.
How can you get involved?
As a neurological condition that provides Mental, Emotional and social challenges each and every day we know that children and adults with Autism need to try very hard each and every day to carry out even simple tasks, leaving them quite often exhausted.
In light of this, we are asking the Karratha community to join us by stepping out of their comfort zone and moving their body more often for a good cause.
We have an awesome week install and can't wait to share all the details with you!
